The wait is somewhat over. Though more or less dead, Nokia is still trying to keep up on it’s promises. No, it doesn’t plan to deliver Carla and Donna, but it definitely shows that it cares and more importantly—admits that the Belle is still buggy.

My N8 faces everyday hangs despite doing hard reset couple of times and reflashing the firmware, but I am just fine with it. It is a marvelous piece of  hardware and I don’t need to carry a point and shoot camera everyday.

Coming back to the point, Nokia has started to roll out the much awaited Belle refresh update for the older Symbian lot – Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia X7 and Nokia Oro.

According to a post at Nokia Discussions

great news! We just started to roll out our next update for Symbian called Nokia Belle Refresh for Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia X7 and Nokia Oro with version number 111.040.1511 (Nokia E6, version number 111.140.0058, will follow still this week, Nokia 500 updates will start to be launched within the next few weeks).

This update again brings new features to Symbian smartphones, for example:

-          a new browser with HTML5 web apps support, a new set of homescreen widgets, and the previously released Microsoft Office Mobile App and Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 in one package.

-          Nokia N8 will have some extra apps for imaging

The update will be rolled out in phases, starting with the vanilla versions (i.e.. basic software variants without any specific operator or country configuration). Country and operator variants will follow within the next weeks, depending on local and operator approvals.

PS: Just like after updating from Nokia Anna to Nokia Belle, some apps may not work due to compatibility issues. If you need more information on available apps, please contact your local Nokia Care support. Furthermore, you can also contact the respective App developer to enquire about the compatibility.

The change log as mentioned at AAS is as follows:

  • Web browser is now v8.3.1.4 (was 7.4.2.6 in Belle) and has better HTML5 support
  • More clock widgets (digital clock lookalike)
  • Notes widget, for quick access to notes and to create a new one.
  • Facelift (of playback controls) and functionality for Music player (split of Albums and Artists at last, implemented with tabbed interface, plus warnings of hearing loss when listening with headphones at high volume) – v17.1.14 (was 17.0.16 in Belle)
  • Maps Suite 3.9 built-in (for the full firmware image via Nokia Suite)
  • Qt 4.8.0 now built-in
  • (for N8 only) Big Screen now built-in
  • (for N8 only) DLNA play now built-in
  • (for N8 only and only via Nokia Suite full flash) ColorizIt utility built-in
  • Numerous assorted fixes and optimizations, including Flash video support – high bitrate videos and content are now handled fine, without crashes

The update is still in the roll out phase and many countries would not be able to see it. But the patience would certainly be worth it.

Also, please note that Device update is a very critical procedure and all care should be taken in updating your device. It is advised to make a backup in case anything goes wrong. If you are unsure of what you are doing, it is always advisable to seek some professional help.

Nokia has finally decided to let Qt go, for the better of both. We knew it was going to happen sooner than later. Seen as a “non core” business, it was only a formal announcement that was awaited from Nokia.

qt logo Nokia finally gets rid of Qt, sells it to Digia

Digia will acquire the Qt developer tools business from Nokia, and it will take on product development, as well as the commercial and open source licensing and services business supporting Qt.

While Qt was portrayed as missing “genetic link” between OSes, targeted mainly as the savior of developers who could easily target devices powered by both Symbian OS and MeeGo, Nokia could never fully utilize it’s potential.

But for the developer community, this transition may actually prove to save Qt. While Digia plans to quickly enable Qt on Android, iOS and Windows 8 platforms, Nokia has certainly missed to see the silver lining on the clouds – making Qt as the sole cross-platform development framework.

Tommi Laitinen, SVP of International Products at Digia was quoted saying:

Now is a good time for everyone to revisit their perception of Qt. Digia’s targeted R&D investments will bring back focus on Qt’s desktop and embedded platform support, while widening the support for mobile operating systems.

Though the price of the deal is still unknown, it is rumored that Digia will pay a fraction of the US$150 million Nokia paid to acquire Trolltech, the creators of Qt. Also, about 125 Nokia staff will transfer to Digia as a result, mainly in Norway and Germany.

Nokia yesterday presented its new strategy where it would be undergoing some major changes including a massive reduction in workforce. A part of that strategy is to acquire the Scalado AB.

Håkan Persson, chief executive officer of Scalado AB commented

This is a great opportunity for many of our people to show their leadership in imaging and to continue to build its future…

Doing this as part of Nokia, already a leader in mobile imaging, will reinforce the strength of the technologies and competences developed at Scalado. We are very excited about this opportunity, which is a natural next step in our longstanding relationship with Nokia.

While Jo Harlow, EVP, Smart Devices at Nokia, said

Nokia has been working with Scalado for more than ten years and they’ve contributed to many of our leading imaging applications. This transaction would enable us to combine our leadership in camera devices with their expertise in imaging, helping people move beyond taking pictures to capturing moments and emotions and then reliving them in many different ways

Scalado’s solutions are used in millions on devices worldwide. Post this acquisition, the existing licensing agreements will stay in place. However, any future developments are likely to be exclusive to Nokia. It will also give Nokia an upper hand position in smartphone imaging related intellectual property.

Yesterday Nokia announced it’s new strategy to improve profits and operating model.

The strategy consists of the following key points:

  • -Invest strongly in products and experiences that make Lumia smartphones stand out and available to more consumers;
  • Invest in location-based services as an area of competitive differentiation for Nokia products and extend its location-based platform to new industries;
  • Improve the competitiveness and profitability of its feature phone business.
  • Reductions within certain research and development projects, resulting in the planned closure of its facilities in Ulm, Germany and Burnaby, Canada;
  • Consolidation of certain manufacturing operations, resulting in the planned closure of its manufacturing facility in Salo, Finland. Research and Development efforts in Salo to continue;
  • Focusing of marketing and sales activities, including prioritizing key markets;
  • Streamlining of IT, corporate and support functions; and
  • Reductions related to non-core assets, including possible divestments.

Furthermore, it intends to cut down 10,000 jobs by the and of 2013. Furthermore, Nokia’s leadership team will also see a massive overhaul. Jerri DeVard steps down as chief marketing officer; Mary McDowell steps down as executive vice president of Mobile Phones; and Niklas Savander steps down as executive vice president of Markets. DeVard, McDowell and Savander will all continue in advisory roles through the transition of their roles; however, they step down from the Nokia Leadership Team effective June 30, 2012.

Nokia has also acquired Scalado, an imaging expert (covered in another blog post).

Not only would these changes bring Nokia to profitability, but they would also cost Microsoft less amount of $$$ if it goes ahead and purchases Nokia.

Company announces targeted investments in key growth areas, operational changes and significantly increased cost reduction target

Company lowers Devices & Services outlook for the second quarter 2012

Nokia Corporation
Stock exchange release
June 14, 2012 at 9.30 (CET+1)

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today outlined a range of planned actions aimed at sharpening its strategy, improving its operating model and returning the company to profitable growth. While planning to significantly reduce its operating expenses, Nokia remains focused on the unique experiences offered by its smartphones and feature phones, including an increased emphasis on location-based services.

Nokia’s strategy is about delivering great mobile products that sense the world. Nokia plans to:

- Invest strongly in products and experiences that make Lumia smartphones stand out and available to more consumers;
- Invest in location-based services as an area of competitive differentiation for Nokia products and extend its location-based platform to new industries; and
- Improve the competitiveness and profitability of its feature phone business.

To execute this strategy, Nokia is making changes to its management team by tapping into the strong leadership bench at the company.

To support this period of transition, Nokia intends to improve its operating model by significantly reducing its Device & Services operating expenses, substantially reducing its headcount and reducing its factory footprint. As a result, Nokia intends to return to sustainable non-IFRS operating profitability in Devices & Services as soon as possible.

"We are increasing our focus on the products and services that our consumers value most while continuing to invest in the innovation that has always defined Nokia," said Stephen Elop, Nokia president and CEO. "We intend to pursue an even more focused effort on Lumia, continued innovation around our feature phones, while placing increased emphasis on our location-based services. However, we must re-shape our operating model and ensure that we create a structure that can support our competitive ambitions."

Targeted investments
In Smart Devices, Nokia plans to extend its strategy by broadening the price range of Lumia and continuing to differentiate with the Windows Phone platform, new materials, new technologies and location-based services. In line with this strategy, Nokia today announced the planned acquisition of assets from Sweden-based Scalado, which currently has imaging technology on more than 1 billion devices. This acquisition is aimed at strengthening Nokia’s imaging assets.

Nokia’s location-based platform is expected to be another principal area of investment as Nokia plans to differentiate its portfolio of Lumia smartphones with leading location-based services including navigation and visual search applications such as the recently announced Nokia City Lens. Additionally, the company plans to extend its mapping technology to multiple industries to strengthen the platform and generate new revenue.

In Mobile Phones, Nokia intends to improve its competitiveness and profitability. Nokia aims to further develop its Series 40 and Series 30 devices, and invest in key feature phone technologies like the Nokia Browser, aiming to be the world’s most data efficient mobile browser. Early results of this innovation can be found in Nokia’s latest Asha feature phones which offer a full-touch screen experience at lower prices.

Operational changes and updated cost reduction target
Balancing its investment priorities, Nokia plans to rescale the company by making additional reductions in Devices & Services. Nokia plans to pursue a range of planned measures including:

- Reductions within certain research and development projects, resulting in the planned closure of its facilities in Ulm, Germany and Burnaby, Canada;
- Consolidation of certain manufacturing operations, resulting in the planned closure of its manufacturing facility in Salo, Finland. Research and Development efforts in Salo to continue;
- Focusing of marketing and sales activities, including prioritizing key markets;
- Streamlining of IT, corporate and support functions; and
- Reductions related to non-core assets, including possible divestments.

As a result of the planned changes announced today, Nokia plans to reduce up to 10,000 positions globally by the end of 2013. Nokia is beginning the process of engaging with employee representatives in accordance with country-specific legal requirements.

"These planned reductions are a difficult consequence of the intended actions we believe we must take to ensure Nokia’s long-term competitive strength," added Elop. "We do not make plans that may impact our employees lightly, and as a company we will work tirelessly to ensure that those at risk are offered the support, options and advice necessary to find new opportunities."

Taking into account these planned measures the company now targets to reduce its Devices & Services non-IFRS operating expenses to an annualized run rate of approximately EUR 3.0 billion by the end of 2013. This is an update to Nokia’s target to reduce Devices & Services non-IFRS operating expenses by more than EUR 1.0 billion for the full year 2013, compared to the full year 2010 Devices & Services non-IFRS operating expenses of EUR 5.35 billion. This means that in addition to the already achieved annualized run rate saving of approximately EUR 700 million at the end of first quarter 2012, the company targets to implement approximately EUR 1.6 billion of additional cost reductions by the end of 2013.

As part of these planned changes, Nokia will closely assess the future of certain non-core assets. In line with this, Nokia today announced plans to divest Vertu, its luxury mobile phones business to EQT VI, a European private equity firm.

Renewed leadership team
Nokia also announced today in a separate press release a number of changes to its senior leadership. Nokia announced that it has appointed Juha Putkiranta as executive vice president of Operations; Timo Toikkanen as executive vice president of Mobile Phones; Chris Weber as executive vice president of Sales and Marketing; Tuula Rytila as senior vice president of Marketing and Chief Marketing Officer; and Susan Sheehan as senior vice president of Communications. Putkiranta, Toikkanen and Weber will join the Nokia Leadership Team effective July 1, 2012.

Financial impact and outlook for Devices & Services
Nokia expects further charges of approximately EUR 1.0 billion relating to restructuring activities in Devices & Services by the end of 2013 in connection with its updated Devices & Services operating expense target. This is in addition to cumulative charges of approximately EUR 900 million recognized as of the end of first quarter 2012 in connection with previously announced restructuring activities. By the end of the first quarter 2012, Nokia had cumulative restructuring related cash outflows of approximately EUR 450 million. From the second quarter 2012 onwards, Nokia expects restructuring related cash outflows to be approximately EUR 650 million in 2012 and approximately EUR 600 million in 2013. Out of the total expected charges relating to restructuring activities of EUR 1.9 billion, Nokia expects non-cash charges to be approximately EUR 200 million.

These cost reduction measures are designed to return Nokia’s Devices & Services business to sustainable non-IFRS operating profitability as soon as possible.

During the second quarter 2012, competitive industry dynamics are negatively affecting the Smart Devices business unit to a somewhat greater extent than previously expected. Furthermore, while visibility remains limited, Nokia expects competitive industry dynamics to continue to negatively impact Devices & Services in the third quarter 2012. Nokia now expects its non-IFRS Devices & Services operating margin in the second quarter 2012 to be below the first quarter 2012 level of negative 3.0%. This compares to the previous outlook of similar to or below the first quarter level of negative 3.0%.

"Nokia is significantly increasing its cost reduction target for Devices & Services in support of the streamlined strategy announced today," said Timo Ihamuotila, executive vice president and CFO. "With these planned actions, we believe our Devices & Services business has a clear path to profitability. Nokia intends to maintain its strong financial position while proceeding aggressively with actions aimed at creating shareholder value."

Meet the new Nokia Lumia 900: White- beautiful- award winning design. Now, did anyone think this sparklingly white amazing phone requires any promotion??

nokialumiaw 900 thumb Get free tooth whitening with Nokia Lumia 900

Well, we know it does not. But, there is an unusual promotion wherein the UK residents have the option of free tooth whitening or a pair of Monster purity headphones on purchase of a Nokia Lumia 900 from Phones4u’s flagship London store.

Sometimes firms go to hilarious ends to promote their products. Open-mouthed smile

Well, it seems that Nokia still hasn’t forgotten the veterans. An update for the E72 has been rolled out. Apparently, this update is rolled out OTA as well as through the Nokia Suite.

csc1 Update time–Nokia E72 firmware updated to V91.003

Though no official changelog is released as of now, but an update for a device this old came as a welcome surprise from Nokia.

While a firmware update is always recommended, you should back up all the data before attempting to update the Software. Updating is a risky thing, and an incorrect update might as well result in a bricked phone. So only update if you know what you are doing..!!

Everyone is aware of the Carl Zeiss optics and the N-Series success. First deployed on the most successful phone of it’s time, the N73, this partnership was an instant hit. It has been seven years since then, and the optics have improved considerably, with the Nokia 808 Pureview latest member of the family.

A press release was “released”  by Nokia showcasing the strengthening partnership.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia and Carl Zeiss today announced that the exclusive partnership between the two companies, which has resulted in some of the industry’s best camera smartphones such as the Nokia N8 and the Nokia 808 PureView, has been extended.

The Nokia 808 PureView, which starts rolling out in May, combines high-performance Carl Zeiss optics with Nokia developed algorithms and a super-high resolution sensor to set a new standard in high-end smartphone imaging.

"Carl Zeiss was a crucial partner in the creation of the first PureView experience," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. "The benefits of our ongoing collaboration will be more PureView innovation and further advancements in smartphone imaging in the coming months and years."

Michael Kaschke, CEO, Carl Zeiss AG: "When joining forces with Nokia in 2005, we wanted to push the boundaries of mobile photography. Looking back at seven years of successful partnership, we are proud of the innovations and outstanding products created in this shared journey. Today we are celebrating the extension of our collaboration with a new technology that sets another real benchmark in this sector."

But we beg to differ. If we see the light of events in the past few years, Nokia seems to rely more on the EDoF for it’s phones. In fact, more phones have been released by Nokia having the EDoF technology rather than Carl Zeiss optics.

Carl Zeiss has Sony as it’s partner for the DSLR range and Nokia for the smartphone range. It had also made some ground with a few smartphones from Sony Ericsson. But with Sony and Ericsson going their separate ways, and Nokia focusing more on the EDoF technology for bulk of it’s device, we see the future of this partnership grim. On the long run, it could be more profitable for Zeiss to focus all of its work on Sony, cutting off supply to Nokia completely.

Nokia can and will, however, continue to leverage the Zeiss brand in some of it’s  smartphones, but the number would be dwarfed by the number of phones released with the EDoF lenses, and we continue to be skeptic about the nature of this press release.

What do you think?

Indiagames, a part of the Walt Disney Company, has become the first developer to hit the 100 million download mark in the Nokia Store.

Founder, and CEO, Vishal Gondal noted the success on the lower end devices which are transforming from featurephones into smarterphones

These phones are getting smarter and smarter, and you can’t really call them feature phones anymore.

He points at the complexities of a diverse market like India,

These are new users, and they are spread out across India in smaller cities and towns, and they’re responsible for 1/5 of a million downloads a day of games like Ra.One and Cricket.

While Indiagames is happy about being the numero uno, they look forward to repeat this success story on the Windows Phone Platform.

Windows Phone is a mature platform for developers. It offers a very different experience for users, and that’s why although we’re adapting some of our existing games, we’re also developing new games from the ground up.

Their new target – a billion downloads. We congratulate the developer on achieving this milestone.

Adding more to the trouble of Nokia, Standard and Poor’s had lowered the credit ratings of the Finnish handset maker. It is the third agency to do so following Moody’s and Fitch Ratings. The credit ratings have been lowered to BBB- from BB+ for long term, and to B from A-3 for short term.

S&P thinks that

…the action reflects a downward revision of our expectations for revenues from Nokia’s Devices and Services division in 2012 and a subsequent revision of our profitability and cash flow assumptions.

While S&P was broadly positive about revenue growth from Nokia’s Lumia smartphone line, the growth of this is not offsetting the decline of its Symbian OS business.

It suggested that

..smartphone revenues in absolute terms could start rising by the end of 2012, contributing to a stabilization of revenues in the Devices and Services division toward the end of 2012 or the beginning of 2013.

Another key factor to this downgrade is the position of Nokia in the low end devices market

We understand that Nokia intends to launch new devices to close the gap in this segment but we expect competition from manufacturers of low-price devices to intensify and we have slightly revised our volumes and price assumptions for the mobile phone operations.

Nokia responded to this by saying that they are in the process of implementation of transformation plan to stronghold it’s position in future. It is trying to accomplish lowering the company’s costs, improving cash flow and maintaining a strong financial position, while bringing attractive new products to market.

Though Nokia failed to mention if this strategy is a short term one or otherwise.

Bad luck Nokia, seems the ghost of Symbian has not ceased haunting you..!!

After quite some time, Tamoggemon Ltd. brings you a case review. We plan to be more regular when it comes to reviewing cases and apps so that our esteemed readers can get a deeper insight on different products.

This time we bring you the hand crafted PDair case for the N8.

The case comes neatly packed along with a clip fits perfectly onto any belt.

The build quality of the case is fantastic. We actually received this case from Mobilefun.co.uk couple of months back (I have an uncanny habit of preserving the packaging Winking smile). I initially had an impression that after a month or so, the shine and might of the case would fade away. But I was wrong, the case came out to be clean and never ever required polishing. The leather quality is extremely good, and the stitch quality is equally commendable.DSC06095 thumb Review The PDair case for N8, lives upto expectations

You can see that the leather has become softer and the white stitching line has not lost it’s color.

The device fits perfectly into the case and the cut outs for various hubs and buttons are at the perfect position.

Nokia has reigned for 14 years since 1998, when it became the World’s largest handset maker. Nokia overtook Motorola and now it’s time for Samsung to rule the throne.

According to a Reuter’s poll of analysts, the end of Q1 marks the end of the Nokia reign. Samsung is victorious at 88 million devices in comparison to 83 million of Nokia. Although the margin is not huge, the loss of the top spot impact on Nokia is yet to be unraveled.

Let us wait till 27-April for the final Q1 numbers from Samsung and the official announcements for the rise of the new leader.
