A recent Financial Times interview with Nokia’s CEO has unveiled the following, somewhat interesting statement:

Consumers who pay a premium for Nokia mobiles featuring Comes With Music get unlimited access to music by bands from all leading record labels. Mr Kallasvuo says there is “so much consumer interest” in the service.One person familiar with Nokia’s Comes With Music service in the UK said initial sales had been “OK, but not earth shattering”. The person, who declined to be named, said some consumers were reluctant to pay extra for a mobile with the service – sold through Carphone Warehouse, the mobile phone retailer, and 3, the smaller mobile operator – given how piracy meant they could get the music free on the internet.

An UK-based magazine has recently claimed that the lack of success with CwM is largely to be blamed on the original, S60-less 5310 XpressMusic, which was described to be “unappealing” to many customers (pictured on the left). I personally predict that Nokia needs to offer more devices with CwM in order to be successful: customers currently have a cheap and a very expensive option, but nothing in between…
