When looking at the front of the Nokia N95-8, one immediately notes the huge screen. It would actually be more than big enough for a real VGA screen.

Nevertheless, Nokia stuck to a QVGA screen on the box. The reason for this is simple: even though QVGA and VGA screens are similarly priced nowadays, this most likely wasn’t the case when the N95-8 was being developed. Back then, the VGA screen would have added at least a few euros to the total price – something that Nokia wisely wanted to avoid.

However, most S60 apps are optimized for QVGA screens – can the N95’s stack up?

Our first contender is a Nokia N71. One can immediately see the “whiter” white on the N95’s screen:

Palm’s Treo 680 can’t stack up either:

Cutting a long story short: the screen of the N95 8GB is excellent. The large physical size and excellent contrast allows you to see stuff easily. This enables you to use smaller fonts, which somewhat compensates for the lack of a VGA screen…
