The history of the S60 platform is full of annoying binary breaks – developers had to recompile (and partially rewrite) their applications multiple times in the past as new OS versions required different binary formats.
The binary break introduced in S60v3 has been the biggest so far: not only was a recompile needed, but the company furthermore demanded certification to be added. It goes without saying that developers were pissed…
However, it looks like Nokia learned a lesson – S60v5 is said to be binary compatible with S60v3 applications in most aspects. Simon Judge reports the following:
“If you have only used AVKON UI components in your applications, then you do not need to change your code to have your application run in S60 5th Edition mobile devices. AVKON UI components handle touch events. Applications that implement controls inherited from AVKON controls and override CCoeControl::HandlePointerEventL() should also call the base class implementations of these functions.”
We are currently pursuing an interview with a Nokia specialist – in the mean time, why not visit Simon’s blog to find out more!
