When looking at the Nokia N81 8GB, one immediately feels that one is looking at a media-centric handset due to the dedicated media buttons and 3-5″ headphone jack. Media-centric handsets usually have excellent cameras - can the N81 8GB stack up?
Hardware-wise, the camera remains on the level of the N71’s - 2MP, fix focus and a flash LED. Even though the camera software looks like the one found on higher-end models like the N82, the image quality still isn’t exactly high-end even on outdoor/daylight shots(click on the samples below for full-size):

As usual for LED phones, shots in the dark turn out really really bad:

Without flash, images aren’t too much better:

The phone has digital zoom - its effects on image quality IMHO don’t need to be explained:

In the end, the N81 8GB’s camera is a mayor disappointment - yes, the 2MP images are decent and all, but not what you expect from a highend phone…
Tune in soon for a look at the system software!

hi its true tat n81 has a very very bad camera i have n81. i expected a min. of 3.2MP to 5MP for n81. it does not ve a camera shutter too. makes it een more worse. well can we additionally get a shutter and upgrade the camera PIXELS?
would wait for ur reply…
Hi Dragon,
AFAIK, upgrading the camera on an existing N81 is not possible. However, enough feedback like the one given in my review above may lead Nokia to improve the camera on the N81’s successor box!

In that case can you say that N78 a better replacement for N81? since N78 comes with 3.15 MP camera. I dont know the price variations, but feel we have all other features of N81 (not completely sure)

Please stay tuned for further info - as soon as I have the box in my hands, I will post you further info!

Great Review,
I just have one thing i want to say about the camera software, that its really great, but like the above mentioned, the camera lense really needs a lot of development.
Greg.
Hi Greg,
thank you so much for talking back!
Stay tuned for a review of the N82 - same software but much better hardware…
