Nokia N95 8GB NAM(north america) “drops”

While the Nokia N95 8GB has made sporadic appearances on Austrian roads for quite some time, no version supporting the GSM frequencies used in the USA has materialized so far.

Now, online retailer MobileCityOnline has begun to take preorders for a device it describes as “Nokia N95 8GB Black US NAM (unlocked)“. The phone is expected in 15/2/2008; and has a list price of 999$. Our retailer currently offers it for 799$.

Specs-wise, the N95 8GB NAM is identical to the regular N95 8GB, except that it uses different WCDMA frequencies to work better in the USA. The battery capacity(1200mAH) is the same in both models.

Nokia N-Gage delayed - why it doesn’t matter anymore

Nokia’s N-Gage team(the guys behind the ‘gaming’ department of the phone company) have just announced that their service will be delayed. While most analysts immediately went all bonkers, my longterm (and sad Palm OS) experience tells me that they are too late - the jumping should have set in much earlier…read on to find out why.

Essentially, Nokia’s N-Gage platform was an attempt to converge phone, “PDA” and dedicated gaming machine into one package. The gamble involved was that players were willing to accept compromises in terms of game looks(aka CPU power) and usability if they have to carry but one device. So far, so good - but since the original N-Gages were terribly bad from a hardware point of view, they were doomed from the start.

Enter TapWave. This company pulled essentially the same stunt with their Zodiac handheld; a device combining a very powerful handheld with an ergonomical and pretty powerful gaming machine. The hardware scored excellent reviews and was even picked up by retail stores - but the company died nevertheless.

TapWave’s death obviously has had nothing to do with hardware…the achilles heel of the system was the permanent lack of games. No big publisher ever rolled a Zodiac game; indie games(while excellent) never got the media attention that they deserved.

Nokia originally had loads of publishers pushing out big-name games for the N-Gage. However, it remains questionable if these will still push out games for the second generation(after Nokia turned all their code into sewage nonchalantly). Sega had a similar bork-up with the Saturn - if a company as big as the Sega was back then could not keep publishers close by, how can Nokia?

Once the big publishers leave a platform, their ad budgets follow. Journalists and bloggers follow the big boys…and the platform’s downward spin begins. Steve Townsend’s Oval Racer can be a million times better than Jamba’s latest Need For Speed incarnation - the big name will get media(and player) attention.

In the end, Nokia and its partners will definitely make a nice buck from the N-Gage relaunch. However, the current-gen mobile gaming market has already been sliced-an-diced…and Nokia’s latest baby is not on the pastry list….

BrightHand reviews the Nokia N810

For all those of you interested in the Nokia Nxxx series of web pads; BrightHand has just posted its review of the latest incarnation called N810:
http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13497

Cutting a long story short, Ed Hardy praised the device’s excellent web browser(rated to be significantly better than both Opera Mobile and the iPhone’s browser); but criticizes the lack of PIM and Office applications available for the machine. The N810 was especially praised for its battery life(up to 6h); the lack of a true sleep mode was rated as exceptionally annoying…

“Neverball” for S60 - controlled by your N95’s accelerometer

Most of you will probably be familiar with the concept behind games like (the excellent) NeverBall - you need to move a marble from a to b. Sounds easy…until someone telly sou that you can’t move the marble directly but rather need to tilt the board below in order to move it around.

Anyways, Symbian-Freak reports that a midlet implementing this game has hit the road - with a special feature: accelerometer support on the N95:

Head over to their web site to find out more and download the game!

First leak of the Nokia N96

This is a rumor. The TamsS60 team DOES NOT know the source of the images and cannot make any assumptions if they are a hoax or not! Please DO NOT base any business decisions solely on this information!
A member of the MobileReview forums has just posted the following images to their forum. He claims that they show an upcoming Nokia model that will be called N96:

As of now, no further information is available on when/who will ship this device and what it actually is capable of doing. However, the images above indicate that S60v3 FP2 is used; and that the phone comes equipped with a 5MP camera with a Carl Zeiss objective.

Rest assured that the TamsS60 team will keep you posted if we hear of something new - stay tuned!

P.s. If you know anything about the Nokia N96(or any other upcoming phone), please send an email to Tamog@gmx.at asap!

Beta 2 of Carbide.c++ v1.3 drops

For all those of you currently using Carbide.c++; a new beta of the program has just been posted to the Google Group. From now on, new releases can be downloaded with the “Update” facility built into Carbide - no more need to reinstall everything to stay current.

Here’s the text of the original announcement:

Okay you beta users – here is the newest Carbide.c++ Beta.

The feedback on the first beta was very good so far – this time we really need some stress testing.

I am looking for a few prizes to provide to the top Google Groupies in the following two categories:

Most bugs reported (these need to be new ones that are not already tracked in the Bugzilla database). Any of your posts for v1.3 are eligible. We need to be able to reproduce these somehow.
Best (quality) bug reported. Quality counts more than quantity.

These will likely be a shiny Nokia new phone – your choice of an N95 and one other model.

P.s. For all Carbide haters out there - most beta users report that v1.3 is significantly better than its predecessors. Giving it another whirl could really pay out!

SMS Spam Manager - the SMS spam filter for S60

As the cost per SMS has begun to droop lower and lower, SMS spam starts to become a significant problem for many users. Webgate’s SMS Spam Manager promises to be a spam filter for your S60 phone’s short messaging service inbox - can it stack up?

The Active Mode toggle allows you to configure he filter mode. The program can accept or block all incoming messages. Additionally, it can accept SMS only from people in the phonebook - or use a filter list:

Filters can be set up using the Rules tab. Filters can target specific phone numbers, number ranges(e.g. no calls from Zimbabwe for me) or specific text passages in the message body(e.g. no SMS from the ex for me):

SMS Spam Manager can lock itself as a “system service’, and can automatically start whenever your phone is powered up. Additionally, it can display a small icon whenever it is active:

Incoming spam messages are absorbed silently - they can be analyzed in the log tab. False positives can be moved to the inbox manually:

This review looked at version 1.05(70) of SMS Spam Manager on a Nokia N71. The program needs 121KB of RAM and can be installed onto a memory card.

In the end, WebGate’s SMS Spam Manager is a killer tool against all kinds of SMS spam. Should your phone ever come under attack, get this application by all means. The price of 10$ is a small fee to pay for total peace of mind…
